Scott Pitcher

Born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Kokomo, Indiana Scott Pitcher graduated from Taylor High School in 1972. He worked at the Chrysler Transmission Plant for 4 years before purchasing Higbee Auto Body Co., which he sold 4 years later. In late 1982 he founded Amber Electric, an electrical contracting business, and Brandon Buildings, Inc., a holding company for several small properties. Both companies bear his childrens names.

In 1987, at the age of 33, his belief in Kokomo inspired him to purchase the city's 100-year-old, dilapidated 18,000 sq. ft. City Building for $35,000 and thus entered the general contracting business. In his "maverick" style he developed this abandoned architectural gem into a business office complex covering almost an entire city block. The complex includes two office buildings, two-pair of 2,500lb. hand-carved stone lions poised on pedestals, landscaping and private parking. This first project became a masterpiece and the benchmark of Pitcher's high quality work. It is the keystone for Kokomo's downtown revival.

His business exploded in 1988 with the purchase of 19 properties from an estate and it hasn't slowed since. Pitcher's signature is rescuing historically significant architectural pieces and beautifully blending them to create striking new facades. The volume of simultaneous renovations he executes is not only cost effective but creates contagious community excitement and, consequently, community investment. His company, Fortune Management, Inc., has transformed downtown Kokomo with a combined private sector investment of $37 million in more than 80 renovation projects--all with no federal, state or local government assistance. His company has raised the bar on corporate citizenry, making residents the winner with a healthy downtown to anchor the economic viability of the entire community, with a greatly increased tax base and a restored sense of community pride.

In 2002 The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Pitcher "National Main Street Hero" in recognition of his exceptional leadership in downtown revitalization. This honor includes contributions to commercial district revitalization and actions that can be duplicated for other communities. Scott Pitcher was recognized as a role model and spokesperson for urban revitalization and continues to contribute to many communities’ revitalization efforts.

Scott Pitcher has a profound belief in our responsibility to leave our communities better than we found them and he doesn't take lightly the extraordinary power he has to shape the hearts of cities for future generations. He exemplifies the true "American Spirit" in his passion to restore vitality and grandeur to the centers around which strong communities were built.
